| I thought this post deserved a new Pill Art offering! |
Yesterday was a big day in the CF world.
Remember this time last year, when I blogged about a new drug that had the potential to help me become "Almost Normal"?
Yesterday, the FDA granted approval to Kalydeco, the brand name for the drug formerly known as VX-770.
I can't even begin to describe what a big deal this is. In all honesty, my brain can hardly process it. It's quite likely that I won't personally get on it right away—besides the huge question of whether or not our insurance will actually cover it (since the drug will cost nearly $300,000 a year, one of the highest price tags of anything on the pharmaceutical market to date), there are a couple of reasons it might not be the best idea for me to start it immediately—but I hope to do so before too long. And when I do?
My hopes are high. This new drug is by no means a cure, and the jury's still out on how much it will actually change my day-to-day care routine, but it's opening up possibilities I've never even dared to consider before. A life that is less ruled by hospitalizations and the fear of the next big cold. A life that goes well past age forty. The chance that maybe that double lung transplant I've always considered to be a certainty in my eventual future will no longer be necessary. These are things I've never allowed myself to put too much thought into, never allowed myself to really even hope for.
I have no idea what the future will bring, any more than anybody else. But I can say this: After yesterday, I'm more excited to face it than ever.

I am so very excited for you. I, for whatever reason, didn't realize you had the G551D mutation. I can't begin to tell you how very happy I am! I hope that once you are on it, it works miracles like the research has shown so far. Hoping for the DDF508 drug to come out soon so I can share the same dreams/hopes/possibilities!!!!
ReplyDeleteWoohoo!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYay! I've been hoping to hear this ever since you posted about it last year! We'll pray you find a way to get it covered by your insurance. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am so excited!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the picture, too. :)
Woohoo! I'm so excited. We get to embark on the Kalydeco journey together! =) I'm not sure how much Mohan makes (and it's truly none of my business) but as a heads up just incase you fall in this category - Vertex said they would be providing the medication for free to households with no insurance or income under 150k/year. I know being on my own (with a very limited income) this is huge! You might want to check in with your social worker.
ReplyDeleteSuch an amazing accomplishment in the CF journey.
PS I may just be the most excited to finally gain some weight!! Study participants averaged in around 7 lbs. AVERAGED! I could totally pack on another 12 lbs! hehehe Can you tell I'm excited?
Oh also, since Mahon graduated less than 2 years ago, you can believe we're making well under 150k/year. ;-)
DeleteI hope your insurance will pay for it. The drug I take for my kidney, "According to Forbes magazine, Soliris, at $409,500 a year, is the world's single most expensive drug" is paid for in full by my insurance company.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone! I'm pretty excited. And Beth, I would NOT mind 5-10 extra pounds, since I still have not been able to gain mine back!
ReplyDeleteKatie - that is good to know!!! Soliris is actually one of the only drugs out there with a higher price tag than Kalydeco. It will triple my already pretty high medication costs... yikes!
Totally deserved pill art!!! I'm so excited for you (:
ReplyDeleteThanks, Brianne! I'm pretty excited too. :) And glad you liked the pill art!
